It was really Groovy!
The Page class of 1968 40th Reunion Weekend was declared a great success by everyone who attended. We began Friday night at Cellar Anton's where we met for a social hour with a cold, wet rain falling. Needless to say, most of us did not attend the Page-Grimsley football game due to the weather. But our Pirates pulled out a win of 19-6 against the Grimsley Whirlies while we visited and reminisced about football games of old. Many of the attendees dined afterward upstairs in large and small groups.
Saturday morning brought only 6 members downtown to explore Greensboro's newest place to be and to be seen. We visited the restored Carolina Theater and remembered Circle K Days and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. Then we ventured on to Hamburger Square and Natty Greene's, Libery Oak Restaurant, the old Greensboro Record Shop, Triad Stage, the Kress Building, Robin Mack's very impressive store Mack and Mack where she filled us in on her very creative approach to retail women's clothing. We peaked through the doors of the old Ellis Stone Building to see the beautiful curved staircase, remembered Younts Deboe, Montaldo's, the Meyer's Tea Room and Woolworth's Dime Store. Then on to see the beautiful Center City Park and the Cultural Arts Center. Since we were a small group, we stopped in Fincastle's for a burger and fried pickles! It will be interesting to see what the next ten years holds for downtown Greensboro.
Saturday evening began with a long social hour at the Marriott Downtown where our reunion committee had set the stage for the evening with lots of red tulle draped around tables and arrangements of red and white carnations on each of the 11 tables. A sit down dinner was served while attendees continued their catching up conversations. A great selection of 60's music was provided by Greg Rice, a DJ who is our age and knows about the music from our day! And, wonder of wonders, people actually danced! It was just like old times in the auditorium lobby at Page! There were also door prizes given out at various times during the evening for correct answers on a trivia quiz!
On Sunday morning, a small group of people gathered one last time for an intimate brunch at Judy Murphy Worsley's home. Apparently, there were several other small impromptu gatherings over the weekend including a golf round on Saturday. Comments indicated that people really enjoyed doing the small group things as well as the planned events.
Some photographs are posted below, and we encourage you to post your own photos on your profile page. If you have a special photo to share, email it to me and I can post it on the home page. I welcome your comments and suggestions for any improvements or volunteers for our next reunion! Sharon Trull Morgan
